about.
Poet’s Abode is a quiet dialogue between architecture and landscape. Occupying only a small portion of the site, it preserves the surrounding nature while offering a retreat for reflection and creation. A parametric façade allows the structure to merge with its context, softening the boundary between built and natural. Minimal in form yet intentional in material and function, the space balances living and making, crafted to support the poet’s rhythm and solitude.
challenge.
How can a home be designed for a poet and their family that supports everyday domestic life while nurturing the solitude needed for writing? Within tight spatial and height constraints, the challenge is to balance togetherness and retreat, creating an environment that serves both the family’s routines and the poet’s creative process.
concept.
Inspired by blackout poetry, the project explores how meaning emerges through selective concealment. Built volumes occupy only fragments of the site, allowing voids to become equally important and creating a balance between presence and absence.
spatial translation.
The form is broken into dispersed units that encourage movement and discovery. Circulation weaves between volumes, while the façade expresses this idea through a rhythmic play of openness and opacity.
facade strategy.
A parametric facade developed using Rhino and Grasshopper unifies the dispersed volumes through a continuous skin, allowing the building to read as one composition. Each elevation varies in pattern and density, creating diversity and unpredictability while expressing the project’s core idea of blackout poetry through architectural form.
escape within.
The house includes a secluded work sanctuary for the poet, offering quiet isolation and 270 degree views that keep the mind connected to its surroundings. Minimal furniture and a small library allow the space to remain calm and focused, placing the poet’s creative process at the center.
final design.
It all comes together to create a serene and balanced home for the poet and his family. The interplay of built form, void, and landscape shapes an environment that supports both daily life and creative solitude, allowing the house to function as a place of living, reflection, and inspiration.
